Speech at Newark Debate Acacdemy

Speech events involve presentations by either one, two, or a group of students that is judged against a similar type of presentation by others in rounds of competition. Currently NDA offers Dramatic Interpretation and Poetry/Prose as speech events.

Dramatic Interpretation (DI)

In this event students use a short story, play, or another type of published work that students will perform. Students may perform up to 10 minutes of their piece, but may perform no less than 5 minutes. A 30 second grace period is allowed for students if they go beyond 10 minutes.  This event focuses on student’s ability to convey emotion through their dramatic performance. Often students will act out or portray one or multiple characters, but they cannot use neither props nor costumes. Original selections may not be used, it must be a published section of merit.

Judges are told to consider the following things when evaluating rounds:
1) Content
     - Correct and imaginative interpretation of material
     - Effective recreation of fictional character(s)
     - Imaginative handling of the narrative portions of the selection

2) Delivery
     - Effective use of vocal qualities such as force, rate, enunciation, and pronunciation
     - Effective use of gesture and facial expression
     - General poise

Poetry & Prose

In this event students typically perform an unmemorized piece of prose or poetry. Typically before they read their piece they have a short memorized introduction. The students have a time limit of 7 minutes with a typical 30 second grace period, although in some areas of the country it is 10 minutes.
