NDA Launches Elementary School Debate a Month Early!

On October 22nd, The Newark Debate Academy hosted the first Elementary-Middle School debate tournament of the 2016-2017 academic year. The tournament was held at East Side High School and featured nearly 300 students from across the city of Newark, grades 4 to 8, to debate the issues of climate change cooperation with the People’s Republic of China.

RU-Newark Debate Hits the Ground Running in New Season!

On the weekend of October 28th-31st we traveled the team of Nicole Nave and Devane Murphy to the Gonzaga University Debate Tournament in Spokane, Washington. They went 3-3 in preliminary debates and made it all the way to the double-octofinal debate (top 32 teams) out of a field of almost 100. Devane was ranked the 9th best speaker at the tournament and Nicole was 17th out of a field of almost 200 students.

Classroom Debate Project Expanding Rapidly

The goal of the Newark Public Schools 3 year strategic plan is to engage all students in active, discourse-based instruction.  NDA has launched an ambitious initiative to help accomplish this goal.  More than 600 elementary and middle school students will participate in classroom debates in their language arts, science social studies and math class. These classroom debates will occur in 11 schools and 27 classrooms during the 2016-2017 school year, more than triple the number from the previous school year.
