Newark Takes Home the State Championship!


On the cold and windy weekend of March 10th and 11th, Newark Science, Technology High School and University High School attended the NJSDL State Championship at Hunterdon Regional Central High School. 

Debating in the Junior Varsity Lincoln Douglas division, Osmane Sonogo went 3-2 in his preliminary debates!While debating The Lincoln Douglas topic, “The United States ought to guarantee the right to housing".

The policy debaters, disputed the geopolitical topic, "The United stated should substantially increase its economic and/or diplomatic engagement with China". Newark Science High School’s policy team, Brianna Aaron and David Asafu-Adjaye, ended the tournament as the top team with an undefeated record of, 5-0 and ending as Co-Champions, along with their “top speaking” teammates. Monben Mayon and Shaneeza Mohamed closed with a 4-1 winning record.

In the Novice division, Newark Science High School’s policy team, Nilmo Conteras and Christal St. John soared through the tournament placing as the top seeded team in the preliminary debates along with their teammates, Andre Ferriera and Rakiyah Sweeneey, who ranked as the third seed in the preliminary debates.

Newark Science High School’s Novice policy team, Oyinkansola Fasasi and Shameka Augustin closes the tournament with an undefeated record of 5-0. After a very close finals debate against North Star High School’s novice policy team Erin Huggins and Zainab Adenaike, who obtained a winning record of, 4-1 Fasasi and Augstin earned the tittle as New Jersey’s Novice Policy State Champions.
