University High School Dominates 2019 Ridge Debates!

On December 12 and 13, 2019, students competed at the Ridge Debates at Ridge High School in Basking Ridge, NJ. In the varsity Lincoln-Douglas Division, University High School’s Mercy Wah won the tournament on 2-1 decision in finals, completing her qualification for the Tournament of Champions in April. Mercy was also the 13th speaker in the division. Newark Science’s Simone Braithwaite made it to the Semifinals of the tournament and also completed her qualification for the Tournament of Champions. In the varsity Policy Division, Newark Tech’s Zaniah McKoy and Tasawn Roberts were first seed and first and second speaker, respectively. In the semifinals, Newark Tech lost on a 2-1 decision to Newark Science’s Gabriel Quinde-Paez and Javier Serrano. Gabriel and Javier were 9th and 11th speaker, respectively. In the novice policy division, Newark Tech’s Katreena Deodatt and Zyhri Williams made it to the semifinals debate where they lost to Mamaroneck High School. Katreena was first speaker, Sanaa Jennings also from Newark Tech was second, Zyhri was 7th and Ahmyah Williams from Newark Tech was 9th.
